Why is clear communication essential in managing conflict?

Communication can be viewed as a medium for understanding between two individuals.  As such, it is essential as a tool for managing and resolving conflict.  Conflict involves some kind of difference that has arisen between two or more individuals.  Without communication, in whatever form it takes, individuals cannot ascertain the facts, feelings, and intensity of the conflict.  They cannot understand the true nature of the problem, nor the basis for the other individual’s position.  So the understanding that is needed by each individual in the conflict is just not possible without communication or some sort.  The communication may be sophisticated “shuttle diplomacy” often used in the Middle East where opposing parties would lose face if they met together face-to-face.  Communication can be as simple as a phone call or a pat on the back for a job well done.  Different types of communication yield different results in a conflict situation.  Nevertheless, communication itself is essential for understanding.

While communication is essential for conflict situations, it is important to note that communication can also be constructive or destructive.  Not all communication is good.  When emotions are highly charged, constructive comments are rare.  People have a tendency to say things when angered that they really do not mean.  When people are calm, constructive comments are more likely.  People can communicate with the intent to deceive or they can share openly and honestly their viewpoints.  If communication is essential for resolving conflict, then constructive communication should be the goal of conflict management.
