Feel Like Singing?
I will sing to the LORD because He has dealt bountifully with me. (Psalm 13:6, NKJV)Have you ever been in a very difficult situation in life? Surely we have all experienced difficult times at some point in our lives. Maybe you are going through such a time now: a child has become very ill, someone you love has hurt you in a big way, or you are stuck in a bad job with seemingly no way out. The writer of this Psalm was David who, at the time, was being persecuted by political opponents. It is at such times in life that all seems dark and confused. How then could David say, "I will sing to the LORD"? Singing and troubles just do not get along very well. But David was exercising genuine faith in the LORD.
The key point is the reason David can sing. David says that he will sing (future) because the LORD has dealt with me (past). The present darkness cannot shroud the light of God in His past dealings with David. It is the same for you and I. God's past mercy and faithfulness cannot be changed or forgotten in the life of any believer. Because of God's provision in the past, you can look forward to the future where you will again sing to the LORD.
In fact, because you know that God is, has been, and always will be merciful and faithful, you can even sing during the dark times. Remembering God's faithfulness in His past dealings helps you to endure patiently the troubles that confront you in the present.
By faith in the LORD you can experience joy in the midst of dark and confusing times. He will put His song in your heart, a song of gratitude and praise. Know that God will be merciful to you, just toward your enemies, and gracious in His provision for all your needs. So why not "sing to the LORD"?
