Good Gifts From Dad That Last
A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children. (Proverbs 13:22)
Fathers are special. They have been given the responsibility for the family - the most basic unit of any society. It is abundantly clear in history that when the family unit of a nation falls apart, the nation itself soon follows. Let us resolve to pray for the family as designed by God, and for "dear old Dad" who needs lots of support to lead it down the path of righteousness.I don't know about you, but I don't think I'll have much money to leave my own children, much less enough to leave an inheritance that would last through two generations. So I searched through Proverbs to find other gifts I could leave that would last. I found five key things a father can leave to his children that will stand the test of time. Put these into practice in your life and see the bounty that results...
Wisdom A wise son brings joy to his father (14:16a). How can a man have a wise son? Pass it on. It doesn't matter how much "schoolin" you've had - wisdom comes from the Lord and begins with fear of the Lord (that is love, honor, reverence for God). Fear the Lord and shun evil in your life. Then you can ask the Lord for wisdom to guide your family - and He will honor the request of a godly man.
Instruction A wise son heeds his father's instruction (13:1). Constantly look for ways to train your children - as you're walking down the road, at home in the yard, before they go to bed, when they awake and get dressed for school. Find ways to make God's way clear to them in real life illustrations.
Discipline He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him (29:15). Yes, we must discipline our children. But be careful as the proverb says. The rod is a rod of correction not punishment. Sometimes a swat on the behind is necessary to remind a purposefully rebellious child of your instruction. But the major motive behind discipline is always love.
Stable environment He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress and for his children it will be a refuge (14:26). Children need a refuge from the world. A place to feel secure. A place to hear the truth. A place to experience love, sharing and caring. How do you "secure" the fortress? Try prayer - for yourself as the leader of the family, for your wife, and for each child. No weapon in any arsenal can pack as much punch as the power of God in your life.
Straight path Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right (20:11).
If this advice is good for children, certainly it applies to fathers. Walk uprightly in the eyes of God and men. Children imitate their parents, given the quantity and quality time to do so. Let them imitate a godly walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Trust Him and let Him show old Dad the way - He will because He lives and is still changing lives!
