Even when life is not good…
God is faithful! He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. (Deuteronomy 32:4, NIV)Change is one of those things that is a certainty in the human experience. Your favorite brand of clothes may change its style. Your favorite radio station may change from music to news and talk. Churches change. Our church is going through a time of change. As we continue to seek God and His will for our church, the change will be for the better. But even good changes are hard to handle: Change is uncomfortable, Change creates uncertainty and confusion, Change creates fear.Yet there is One who will never change. Our God is faithful to His character, His promises, and to His people. I find great comfort in the midst of changing circumstances knowing that God is faithful. Especially during the dark times, I cling to the reality that God is faithful.
- He never stops being good. Remember, even when life is not good, God is good. God is faithful in this.
- He never leaves or forsakes us. Remember, even when life is not good, God is with you. God is faithful in this.
- He never threatens to tear down your mansion in Heaven. Remember, even when life is not good, God has given you Heaven. God is faithful in this.
The first time the Bible speaks of God's faithfulness is when Abraham's servant asked God to lead him to the wife that God wanted for Abraham's son, Isaac. The servant was led straight to the home of Abraham's relatives. And so he praised God saying:Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives. (Gen. 24:7, NIV)
When God revealed a glimpse of His receding glory to Moses, God declared about Himself:
The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. (Exo. 34:6, NIV)
Throughout the Bible God's faithfulness is declared. In the New Testament, Paul writes this about our LORD:
He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. (1 Cor. 1:8-9, NIV)
There is a wonderful story told about Winston Churchill.1 As a young boy, he nearly drowned in the deep end of a pool. His friends screamed and the gardener jumped in to save young Churchill's life. His family gratefully paid for the gardener's son to go to college. Later, as Prime Minister of England, Churchhill became ill with an infection. The best doctor available was brought in on the case. Alexander Fleming, the inventor of penicillin, was able to save Churchhill's life. Fleming, as it turns out, was the gardener's son. Winston Churchhill owed his life to both a father and his son.
It is very unusual for a man to owe his life twice to someone, especially the same family. Yet how many times over do we owe our very life to God who is faithful? Let us hold fast to that truth in changing times and in difficult days. And let us faithfully praise the living God who is faithful.

1 There is some debate as to whether this story is true. Even if it is not, it still helps to illustrate an important principle.
